Christmas Quiz 2010

Answers 1-15 are all place names. The first 10 contain bridge, the next five contain bridge terms.

1) Where might you…

  1. Find a soup ingredient in Edinburgh? Stockbridge.
  2. Find “sir” or one of Mohamed Al-Fayed’s cast-offs? Knightsbridge (Al-Fayed sold Harrods last summer).
  3. Find something to pass to the left? Bridgeport.
  4. Start to stutter at river crossing, or maybe catch the blues? Stamford Bridge.
  5. Lose an E but gain two Hs and an O? Bridgwater (Bridg[e] + H2O).
  6. Find something pressing on Severn? Ironbridge.
  7. Go to learn but only find a backward computer? Cambridge.
  8. Find royalty in South Devon? Kingsbridge.
  9. Find a chicken taking notes in Yorkshire? Hebden Bridge (Hen with BDE in).
  10. Find a conurbation in Barbados? Bridgetown.

2) On a slightly different tack…

  1. What’s the puppet village that beats the rest? Trumpton.
  2. Where might old ladies go in Devon? Bideford.
  3. Where might the leader of the Light Brigade live in Wales? Cardigan.
  4. Where would you find no honour in Lincolnshire? Yarborough.
  5. Find Masefield’s roots, and hear heavy fruit, in Hereford and Worcs? Ledbury (John Masefield’s birthplace).

3) Word Games

  1. Which is the only day of the week to have an anagram, and what is it? Monday (Dynamo).
  2. Which two months of the year have anagrams and what are they (1pt each)? March (Charm) & May (Yam). There is actually a third – Prial (April) but my web reference quoted a different April anagram that wasn’t in my dictionary. Prial is a bit of an obscure word. I’d never come across it before.
  3. Four English words are anagrams of the names of planets. What are they (1pt each)? Heart & Hater (Earth), Arms & Rams (Mars).
  4. There are 20 Official Scrabble Words with no vowel or Y. How many can you list?
I take no responsibility for this list, which is from the Scrabble tools web site:
BRR, BRRR, CRWTH, CRWTHS, CWM, CWMS, HM, HMM, MM, NTH, PFFT, PHPHT, PHT, PSST, SH, SHH, TSK, TSKS, TSKTSK, TSKTSKS.
  5. How many words of 6 or more letters can you list in which all the letters are in alphabetical order (eg. if 5 letters allowed, BEEFY would fit the bill)?
Again, not my list. If you had other words that are in your dictionary but not here then that’s fine:
